  • Keep general traffic out of work areas
  • Provide good task lighting and sufficient general lighting for safe access when task lights are off
  • Have legally installed gas and electrical work
  • Protect your power outlets with an earth leakage detector or keep outlets more than 1 metre away from a water source
  • Earth a stainless steel bench or sink insert with a drainer in case a faulty appliance is placed on it
  • Have a fire extinguisher or blanket handy
  • Do not have curtains over cooktop
  • Install a smoke detector in close proximity where it will be activated if a fire starts in the kitchen (not in the kitchen because steam or cooking fumes may activate it)
  • Have secure storage for knives such as a block or rack
  • Have room for pot handles to tuck out of the way on the cooktop
  • Have a hot pot landing area
  • Have a hot plate guard to protect young children
  • Select ovens, cooktops and dishwashers with childproof controls
  • Store hazardous materials out of reach of young children
  • Keep appliance cords short so they don't hang loose or over the hob
  • Have rounded corners on benchtops and tables
  • Store appliances at user friendly heights (especially microwaves and ovens)
  • Check overhead cupboard doors don't extend past benchtop
  • Keep heavy items low down
  • Use non-slip flooring
  • Keep a first aid kit emergency survival kit well stocked and up-to-date
